This involves exploring and understanding key concepts related to participating in physical activities and sports, as well as developing the ability to make simple, informed decisions during play. The goal is for children to start connecting movement with thought (Ennis, 2017).

Key Vocabulary to Introduce at This Stage

This list presents fundamental concepts important to teach preschool and kindergarten students. It facilitates their comprehension and application through playing games and engaging in recreational physical activities. Introducing this vocabulary consistently and contextually supports children's cognitive, motor, and socio-emotional development, linking language with the experience of movement.

Spatial and Body Orientation Concepts

Help children understand their body in relation to space and follow movement instructions.

  • Right / Left

  • Up / Down

  • Side to Side

  • Feet together / Feet apart

  • Sit / Kneel / Stand / Lie down

  • Squat

Movement and Locomotion Concepts

Essential vocabulary to describe and execute different ways of moving.

  • Walk

  • Run / Jog

  • March

  • Roll / Slide

  • Jump

  • Zigzag

  • Column / Row / Circle

Basic Manipulative and Sports Skills Concepts

Terms related to interacting with objects and fundamental sports actions.

  • Throw / Catch / Pass

  • Kick / Dribble

Rhythm and Speed Concepts

To understand the intensity and tempo of movements.

  • Slow / Fast

Socio-Emotional and Game Concepts

Vocabulary that promotes positive interaction and understanding of group dynamics.

  • Collaborate / Team

  • Rules

  • Game

  • Expectations (introduced simply)

Body Control and Basic Physical Qualities Concepts

Terms that help children develop awareness of their own body and its capabilities.

  • Balance

  • Body control

  • Spatial awareness

  • Speed / Flexibility (as basic qualities)

  • Crossing legs (movement involving crossing the midline, important for neurological development)

Introducing this vocabulary through practical, repetitive games and activities will help children build a solid foundation for their physical literacy. This will enable more active and conscious participation in physical education and school sports. We recommend using visual aids, like posters, to illustrate concepts and facilitate learning.
